Resumen

El envejecimiento es un fenómeno multidimensional, producido por variaciones en el funcionamiento de los sistemas fisiológicos, debido a causas intrínsecas y extrínsecas. En el trabajo se realizó una revisión bibliográfica sobre los cambios que ocurren en el sistema nervioso y el funcionamiento cognitivo en los ancianos, así como los elementos que afectan al mismo y cuáles contribuyen a mantenerlo o fomentarlo en la vejez. Se concluye que las transformaciones que se sufren en el funcionamiento del sistema nervioso al envejecer provocan una disminución del funcionamiento cognitivo, lo cual está influenciado por diversos factores relacionados con el estilo de vida de los individuos.
