Kinetics irregularities during the ferruginous lateritic ore reduction by hydrogen

Abstract

The objective was to study the ferruginous lateritic ore reduction process under non-isothermal conditions via a thermogravimetric analysis in a Du Pont 1090 device at up to 900 0C. Hydrogen was used as a reductive gas. The apparent activation energy calculation results indicate that the control process is governed by the chemical reaction. The study of the reduction process using pellets of this mineral under isothermal conditions was conducted in a heat-resistant steel cylinder under a reducing atmosphere composed of H2=56,1 %, CO=37,4 % and CO2=6,5 % at temperatures of 890 0C and 960 0C. The result was a metal with nickel content which was characterized using the scanning optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction and optical microscopy techniques.
