Cuban cities on seismic alert
Keywords:
earthquakes, seismicity, seismic risk, seismic alert.Abstract
Earthquakes of 1 to 3 magnitudes eventually reaching up to 8, take place in Cuba and adjacent areas. Although those with a magnitude greater than 3 are generally perceptible, the ones usually causing damage are those with a magnitude greater than 5; however, its negative impact largely depends on the state of the built infrastructure and the hypocenter. This essay is a contribution to risk perception in Cuban population and it introduces the concept of cities in seismic alert, which is based on the principle that where destructive seismic events occurred in the past it is very likely they will be repeated in the future, unless the infrastructure be substantially improved. A set of recommendations is also proposed for Cuban cities defined in seismic alert.Downloads
