Abstract

The objective of the work is to determine the influence of the bevel angle in the butt welding of an ASTM A 36 steel welded with a coated electrode of type E 7018 with a diameter of 4 mm. 14 mm thick plates were welded, with edge preparation at 30 and 35o respectively. After the union was made, with optical microscopy and image processing, the variations in the melted zone, the one affected by heat and the interface of both bevels were determined. It was obtained that, the best influence has the angle of 35o, due to a microstructure similar to that of metal as it has a slower cooling. The structures of the 30o bevel are made of a ferritic-pearlitic matrix, the acicular ferrite in the molten zone and the one affected by heat and polygonal, columnar, pearlite and bainite ferrite in the interface and in the 35o, allotriomorphic ferrite and of pearlite in the molten zone and banded pearlite and columnar ferrite in the interface, with hardness from 115 to 244 HV for the first and up to 224 in the second angle.
