Abstract

The existing monitoring methods, operation and level of influence on physical stability for the prevention, correction or mitigation of risks due to failures of the tailings dam of the Pedro Sotto Alba de Moa company were evaluated. The processing of the data obtained from the different control instruments, allowed to identify the most vulnerable sectors of the work before natural or anthropic threats. The work was based on the compilation of topographic control monitoring measurements, geotechnical moisture tests of the material used in construction and the results of the Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) geophysics; in addition to the evaluation of satellite images and photographs corresponding to a period of one year of work. The results of the instruments indicate the existence of vertical and horizontal displacements in the northern zone between 10 to 12 cm, together with the existence of furrows and gullies of great magnitude, favor the occurrence of landslides in the dikes of the northern sector. A plan of measures for the prevention, correction or mitigation of the probable negative impacts to occur in the event of a failure of the tailings dam is proposed.
