Abstract

The characterization of phases by digital image processing in an aluminum alloy of type AA 6061 obtained through a gas tungsten welding (GTAW) process was realized. A butt joint was made without edge preparation, in 250x300x3 mm sheets. The digital image processing was carried out based on the stages established for the process. It was determined that the union is structured in three zones, the molten zone, the heat-affected zone and the bead interface, each preceded by phases or microconstituents depending on the temperature of the thermal cycle. The structures are consisting of Mg2Si precipitates, eutectic silicon and Al-Si dendrites, a product of the variations in temperatures that are generated and the phase that has the most influence are the Al-Si dendrites between 72.79 and 97.36% on the matrix, preceded by the eutectic silicon between 23.07 and 40.75% and, finally, the silicon precipitates, reaching up to 23,65%.
