Abstract

The Mine Martí was closed in the first quarter of 2006. Interruptionof the mining activities in this ore body was due to problems with feed oresupply to the Nicaro plant; which is nearly exhausted. There are smallquantities of scattered ore remaining in different ore body locations at verylong distances and with a complex topography. Insufficient ore in the reservesand low ore grades have required the implementation of new overhaulsystems; which have resulted in increased extraction costs. The contribution ofthis investigation is realized by identifying major environmental andsocioeconomic impacts on La Italiana and Mandinga communities as a result ofclosure of the Mine Martí.
