Nickel bearing mining phases in the San Felipe ore body saprolite horizon
Keywords:
nickel laterites, San Felipe ore body, saprolites, smectites, nickel bearing phaseses.Abstract
The article presents the results from the mineralogical, chemical and physical characterization of the saprolite horizon of San Felipe nickel laterites deposit. Analysis by X ray diffraction, sweep electronic and X ray dispersive spectrometry showed that the useful layer is mainly made of very fine grains less than 0,074 mm; this fraction accounts for 80% in average weight. Smectites are the main minerals containing nickel (1,0– 4,0 % of NiO) in the saprolite area, followed by goethite(1,0–1,5 % of NiO). Serpentines in spite of bearing nickel among 5,0 % to 7,5 % of NiO are present in a very little quantity, as well as manganese oxides.Downloads
