Modeling of sand and gravel deposits in southern plain of Pinar del Rio province

The present research aims at establishing the sand and gravel deposits models of the southern plain of Pinar del Río and identifying the main regional controlling factors. The modeling is based on three elements: 1) the review of data supplied by previous works, 2) the granulometric data processing, 3) the study of the spatial distribution pattern of sand deposits using spatial analysis methods (Fry and fractal analysis). The cluster analysis, based on grain size parameters, identified five different deposits groups. The Fry plot of the deposits, located in the central part of the plain, revealed that the sand lenses, composing the deposits, form a narrow band with NE alignment. According to the fractal analysis results the distribution pattern of lenses is bifractal, implying that geological control son deposition and location operatedontwo different spatial scales. Three model type of sand deposits were identified on the base of the processing results: well-sorted quartzsand deposits of alluvial-deltaic origin, quartzsand deposits with high clay content of alluvial–marine origin, that comprises the western and central subtypes, and alluvial deposits associated with the recent rivers.Downloads
