First record of diatom Distephanosira architecturalis (Brun) Gleser for Senado Formation, Camagüey, Cuba
Keywords:
biostratigraphy, fossil flora, Distephanosira architecturalis, Senado Formation, Camagüey.Abstract
In Senado Formation, the knowledge about fossil diatoms flora is quite scarce; in Cuba, general speaking, studies are practically lacking. Determining Distephanosira architecturalis species represented a challenge due to its predominance in high latitudes. The aim of this research is to make public the first record of Distephanosira architecturalis for the Senado Formation in Central Cuba, providing its description based on biological microscopy. Distephanosira architecturalis was observed in sediments from Senado Formation, so its presence represents an extension of knowledge about distribution of taxon’s area and, in addition, allows us to consider the lower part of this unit with a stratigraphic distribution from the Middle Eocene.Downloads
