Abstract

Empirical relationships among different magnitude scales reported by regional sources and the Cuban Seismological Service for earthquakes in the area of Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola Islands are calculated for catalog homogenization purposes. Catalogs from 1973 to 2012 with a sample set of 8 179 events in the magnitude range 3–7 were compiled and correlated using the Simple Linear Regression method. The average difference between the magnitudes ranged from 0,13 to 0,46 and the correlation factors from 0,58 to 0,94, been rejected the lowest values of the latter. These equations are very similar to some of the global relations found in previous studies. These relationships can be used for catalog homogenization in seismic hazard in the study region with the exception of the relation involving the Coda magnitude (Mc) of the Cuban Network.
