Los indicadores ambientales permiten un rápido diagnóstico de los cambios ambientales que ocurren en el medio y son un reflejo de organización conceptual para la evaluación de los cambios de los ecosistemas como resultado de la acción humana. Los autores proponen indicadores ambientales sectoriales, que se dividen en indicadores de tendencia, indicadores de impacto e indicadores económicos para el medio geominero, el cual ha sido considerado devastador pero fuente y a la vez soporte del bienestar humano en el territorio y la nación.
