Sustainability criteria for exploiting granite in Huila province, Angola
Keywords:

National and foreign companies distributed around Huila, Benguela, Kwanza Sul, Kwanza Norte, Cunene and Namibe provinces exploit granite quarries in the Republic of Angola. The main cause effecting the environment caused by this increasingly intense mining activity is the non-existence of sustainability criteria that contribute to a rational and responsible mining operation. The purpose of this study is to establish sustainability criteria for exploiting granite quarries in Hulla province. It was showed by using a four-stage methodology: bibliographical analysis, field work, consulting to specialists and applying the Delphi method that exploiting Huila granite quarries impact vegetation, fauna, soil, surface and ground water, the atmosphere, population, economy and landscape; therefore fifteen sustainability criteria were established for the exploitation of these quarries, each criterion was characterized and their ranges were determined for qualitative and quantitative evaluation. The sustainability criteria obtained can be applied in other similar contexts.Downloads
