Procedure for setting belt conveyor speed in lateritic mines
Keywords:
belt conveyors, technological design, lateritic ore, power optimizationAbstract
Currently, there is no established methodology to set the speed values for belt conveyors to move lateritic ores and other bulk materials. The speed is set according to past experience and the belt operating condition. This article provides theoretical considerations about an international method used to calculate technological parameters for belt conveyors, in which the energetic design is determined by the speed. The objective is to establish the maximum speed value for the belt to move. This will allow the calculation of number of rollers and the angle between the rollers where the trough geometry is defined. The design will guarantee maximizing productivity with a minimum belt width. The CO2CO3 conveyor operating in Nicaro nickel plant was taken as a case study. The results proved equipment over-dimensioning and excessive power consumption reaching 37% maximum. The optimal maximum velocity was set to be 0,9 m/s to maintain design parameters.Downloads
